This glossary can help you prepare for the IELTS writing tasks related to the Journal articles reading in Education.

academic: adjective; Relating to education and scholarship.; Example: The three pie charts illustrate how many articles from academic journals are read weekly by PhD students and junior lecturers.
corresponding: adjective; Analogous or equivalent in character, form, or function; comparable.; Example: It is almost a third of the corresponding figure for PhD level students.
doctorate: noun; The highest degree awarded by a university faculty or other approved educational organization.; Example: The overwhelming majority of those studying doctorates read at least twelve articles per week in comparison with the average student.
figure: noun; A number, especially one which forms part of official statistics or relates to the financial performance of a company.; Example: It is almost a third of the corresponding figure for PhD level students.
furthermore: adverb; In addition; besides (used to introduce a fresh consideration in an argument).; Example: Furthermore, only five per cent of PhD level students read between one and five articles.
hefty: adjective; Large and heavy.; Example: The average for all students in this category is a hefty 67 per cent.
journal: noun; A newspaper or magazine that deals with a particular subject or professional activity.; Example: The three pie charts illustrate how many articles from academic journals are read weekly by PhD students and junior lecturers.
journal articles: noun phrase; Journal articles are shorter than books and written about very specific topics. A journal is a collection of articles (like a magazine) that is published regularly throughout the year.; Example: The pie charts below illustrate the number of journal articles read per week by all students.
overwhelming: adjective; Very great in amount.; Example: The overwhelming majority of those studying doctorates read at least twelve articles per week in comparison with the average student.
research: verb; Investigate systematically.; Example: It is clear that those students who are researching for a PhD.
respectively: adverb; Separately or individually and in the order already mentioned.; Example: The figures were 80 per cent and twelve per cent respectively.
weekly: adverb; Once a week.; Example: The three pie charts illustrate how many articles from academic journals are read weekly by PhD students and junior lecturers.
